Tibetan Singing Bowls

Messengers of Peace

For a thousand years, the people of Nepal and Tibet have turned to the peaceful, mystical music of Singing Bowls for meditation, healing and delight! This one-day workshop sends you on an aural vacation to the Himalayas. In the morning, you'll practice deep listening and learn how to make a bowl sing. We'll end with a relaxing meditation. In the afternoon, we’ll play with bowls ranging from tiny to gigantic, exploring the nuances of sound and physical vibration. Following a chakra-tones meditation, we’ll end the day with a singing bowl jam session, echoing a Nepalese evening tradition.

You’re welcome to attend just the morning or afternoon session, or spend the whole day immersed in the magic of the Bowls.

Location

Calgary Jewish Community Centre (JCC) 1607 – 90 Ave SW
403-253-8600

We’ll meet in the Chapel, an acoustically soft room with wood panelling and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a park. The room has no fixed seating, so you’ll have a choice of sitting on a folding chair or lounging on your yoga mat.

We’ll also have the Seniors’ Lounge, a cozy space with wet bar, couches and tables, plus open floor space for mats.

And you’ll be welcome to sit and play your bowl on a couch in the Lobby area.

What to Bring

No special equipment required, but we suggest...

  • yoga mat / blanket
  • something to place under your head
  • something to cover your eyes (sleep mask or eye pillow)
  • journal and pen
  • drawing paper and crayons (some thoughts go beyond words)
  • water bottle

You’re welcome to bring your own singing bowl for a visit with the other bowls, a lesson on how to help it sing, or to try a variety of mallets. We'll attach an easily removed sticker to identify your bowl.

Lunch and Snacks

Sound vibration travels through the water inside every cell: you’ll enjoy the experience more if well hydrated, so we recommend bringing a bottle of water or tea.

For meditation, it’s best to eat light meals only. If bringing your own snacks, please keep in mind JCC is a Kosher facility.

Lunch is available from Karen’s Cafe inside the JCC, or across the street at Good Earth Glenmore Landing.
